PTE Core vs PTE Academic
Same company, same screens, same 10 to 90 scale, and the wrong one will be refused. PTE Academic is the study and global-migration test; PTE Core is the test IRCC accepts for economic immigration and citizenship. Why there are two tests
PTE Academic has existed since 2009 and was designed to predict how well someone can cope with English-medium university study. Its listening items are lectures, its reading passages are textbook-style, and it asks for an essay. When IRCC approved Pearson as a test provider for immigration in 2023, the department wanted a test of general, everyday English in line with the Canadian Language Benchmarks, which describe workplace and community communication rather than academic skills. Pearson built PTE Core for that purpose and launched it in early 2024. The two tests share a delivery platform, a scoring engine and a score scale, which is why they look almost identical in the booking system and on screen.
What they share
- The scale. Both report 10 to 90 for each skill and overall. A 75 on either test is the same point on the same scale, although the CLB alignment published for IRCC applies only to PTE Core.
- The engine. Both are scored automatically, including speaking and writing, on the same traits: content, pronunciation and oral fluency for speech; content, form and language traits for writing.
- Most of the tasks. Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Respond to a Situation, Answer Short Question, Summarize Written Text, both reading fill-in-the-blanks tasks, Reorder Paragraphs, the multiple-choice tasks, Summarize Spoken Text, Highlight Incorrect Words, Select Missing Word, Listening Fill in the Blanks and Write from Dictation appear in both.
- The logistics. Both are about two hours, taken at a Pearson test centre with a headset, bookable on demand, with results typically in two business days and scores shared digitally from myPTE.
What is different
Tasks
PTE Academic has the Write Essay task (a 200 to 300 word argument in 20 minutes), Re-tell Lecture (listen to an academic lecture, then summarise it aloud), Summarize Group Discussion and Highlight Correct Summary. PTE Core has none of these. In their place it has Write Email, which asks for a 50 to 120 word email in nine minutes on an everyday situation, and it gives more weight to the short integrated items. A PTE Academic candidate moving to PTE Core usually finds it quicker and less demanding on vocabulary but stricter on email conventions and tone; the reverse move adds the essay and lecture retelling, which need a different kind of preparation.
Content
PTE Core's texts and audio are about renting a flat, a community programme, a change at work, a product review. PTE Academic's are about geology, economics, a research finding. The language level is broadly comparable, but the vocabulary load is not: PTE Academic expects you to handle technical nouns and abstract argument; PTE Core expects you to handle register, politeness and practical detail.
What each result is for
This is the difference that matters. IRCC's list of approved English tests for Express Entry contains CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. PTE Academic is not on it, and a PTE Academic result entered in an Express Entry profile is not valid for the language requirement. PTE Academic is, on the other hand, what universities and colleges accept for admission, and it was one of the tests listed for the Student Direct Stream before IRCC closed that stream on 8 November 2024. For study, ask the institution; for permanent residence or citizenship, it is PTE Core.
Cost, delivery and results
Pearson prices both tests by country rather than publishing one global fee, and in a given country the two are usually priced the same or close to it; use Pearson's price finder for your test centre (as of October 2026 third-party listings put PTE Core at roughly CAD 340 to 350 in Canada and around ₹18,000 to 18,900 including GST in India). Both are test-centre only for visa and immigration purposes. PTE Academic Online exists for institutions that accept it, but it is not accepted for any visa or immigration purpose and there is no online PTE Core at all. Rescheduling and cancellation follow the same Pearson policy: free changes up to 14 days before the test, a 50% refund between 13 and 8 days, none at 7 days or fewer. Results for both typically arrive within two business days.
Which one to book
- Permanent residence through Express Entry, a provincial nominee programme or another economic stream: PTE Core.
- Citizenship: PTE Core (the requirement is CLB 4 in Speaking and Listening for applicants aged 18 to 54; confirm current rules on the IRCC site).
- Admission to a college or university, in Canada or elsewhere: PTE Academic, if the institution lists it.
- Migration to Australia or New Zealand: PTE Academic.
- Work or settlement visas for the UK: the PTE Academic UKVI version.
- Study now, permanent residence later: you will probably need both, at different times. Results are valid for two years, so sequence them so the PTE Core result is still valid when you enter the pool.
In myPTE the tests are chosen by answering where you want to go and what you want to do there. Choose Canada and immigration or citizenship, and the system offers PTE Core. If the confirmation email says PTE Academic, contact Pearson before the test date; a result from the wrong test cannot be converted afterwards. The booking guide walks through the screens.
Preparing for one when you have done the other
If you hold a PTE Academic score and now need PTE Core, your preparation is short: learn Write Email, which is new and has seven scored traits including email conventions, and adjust to general rather than academic content. Expect Speaking and Listening to carry over almost unchanged, Reading to feel easier, and Writing to depend on whether your emails are as controlled as your essays were. If you hold a PTE Core score and need PTE Academic, budget time for the essay and for Re-tell Lecture, which have no equivalent in PTE Core and are the two tasks that most often hold Academic candidates back.
Every PTE Core task can be practised free on this site on screens that match the test, and the exam guide lists the full task set with timings and scoring traits. This comparison describes two tests' published formats and acceptance and is not immigration advice; confirm the current rules with IRCC or the institution you are applying to.
